The Quranic injunction of war in Chapter 9 verse 5 comes in the context of aggression faced by Muslims from their opponents. It is a universally recognized principle to fight against those who commit aggression against others. However, the Quran also commands the Muslims to abandon fighting the moment their opponents do so (47:4). Therefore, war in Islam is for a temporary period and only against those who are at war with the Muslims. Moreover, in the present times, this commandment of war has no application; it is a part of history. It must not be understood as a general commandment.
