LIVING WITH GOD

Living with God

Someone has written that Islam is the most misunderstood religion. It is better to say that Islam is the most misrepresented religion. Those who are representing Islam had the responsibility to present it properly but they did not. Islam is the name of the art of life. Experience shows that no person has an allergy to God, but they do have an allergy to religion. This is because religious people have portrayed an incorrect picture of their religion. For example there is a verse in the Quran which says, ‘Kunu rabbaniyin’. This is generally translated as ‘Be worshippers of God’. People often think worship is performance of mere ritual, so they take religion also as ritual. But this translation of the verse is incorrect. The right translation would be: ‘Adopt a God-oriented life.’ Islam requires a person to be God-oriented in both pre-death and post-death periods. Paradise is defined in the Quran as the neighbourhood of God. In other words, it means living with God. In this world too our conduct should be such as if we were living with God.

BEING CONTENT WITH GOD’S DECISION

Being Content with God’s Decision

Those who are not content with God’s decision and have fallen to despair are behaving wrongly. When my first child was three years old, I was in Lucknow. At that time, messages were sent through telegram. I received a message that my child has died. I silently got up and offered prayer in a corner. After this, I did not become sad. To remain sad means to not be content with God’s decision. The Quran describes ‘a soul at peace’ as one which accepts God’s decisions, and for this it is made to settle in Paradise. Paradise is for one who remains content with those decisions of God which usually make people unhappy. But one who accepts these decisions without sadness, will be ensured Paradise.

GOD MADE YOU FOR A HIGHER PURPOSE

God Made You for a Higher Purpose

Robert Clive was a clerk in the East India Company. This was way back in the eighteenth century. His salary was a mere 5 pounds a year. He felt it wasn’t enough for him. And so, one day, he decided to end his life. He pointed his revolver to his head but it misfired. Then, suddenly he cried out that God had made him for a big task! After this, he joined the East India Company’s Army, and slowly, he reached the top. Robert Clive went on to become instrumental in establishing British rule in India.
The Quran and the Hadith tell us that if God prevents a task from happening the way you had planned it, it is a clue that He wants you to do something else. The Prophet once said that when God loves a people, He tests them through difficulties. This is so that you can rethink your life, that can you re-plan your life. If your plans do not get fulfilled, it is an indication from God. It tells you that He has created you for something bigger than what you are presently involved in. God has not made you to make this world your goal and purpose and to get lost in it. He has created you to worship Him. So, instead of chasing the world, devote yourself to God-realization and inviting other people to God.

Moses was brought up in Pharaoh’s palace, but God created such conditions that his stay there could not continue. This was because God had created Moses, not to live in the palace, but for a far higher purpose, to call people to God. So, be grateful for the seeming setbacks and problems you face in life. They may be God’s way of telling you that He has some other, higher purpose.

PROBLEMS AND OPPORTUNITIES

Problems and Opportunities

One of the realities of life have been mentioned in the Quran in these words: ‘With every hardship there is ease.’ This means that there are opportunities alongside problems. When faced with a problem do not despair, rather try to identify the opportunities present in the situation. A problem never comes alone. Just as a flower comes with fragrance, opportunities always come with problems. A person should think positively and look for opportunities. The best formula of life is to ignore the problems and avail the opportunities. If you do not become negative or start complaining, your mind will automatically begin to search for opportunities. One should never allow one’s mind to become negative, rather one should remain positive in every situation. Positive thinking is the basis of all good while negative thinking is the root of all evil. The Creator has created the world in such a way that problems never come alone, rather they always come with opportunities. In life no situation can arise in which there are only problems and no opportunities: this would go against the law of nature. If one is aware of this, one would maintain one’s positivity and think along constructive lines. This single formula can serve as a solution to all of one’s problems.
