RAMADAN: A MONTH OF DISCIPLINE

Ramadan: A Month of Discipline

The Arabic word for fasting is ‘sawm’. The literal meaning of sawm is to abstain. During the month of fasting, a person refrains from many things. Thus Ramadan is a month of leading a controlled life. Keeping oneself in discipline is very important. Success is for one who knows the art of discipline. One who lacks discipline cannot achieve big success. The month of Ramadan is meant as training in discipline. Discipline is important both in worldly and religious aspects of life.

BEING CONTENT WITH GOD’S DECISION

Being Content with God’s Decision

Those who are not content with God’s decision and have fallen to despair are behaving wrongly. When my first child was three years old, I was in Lucknow. At that time, messages were sent through telegram. I received a message that my child has died. I silently got up and offered prayer in a corner. After this, I did not become sad. To remain sad means to not be content with God’s decision. The Quran describes ‘a soul at peace’ as one which accepts God’s decisions, and for this it is made to settle in Paradise. Paradise is for one who remains content with those decisions of God which usually make people unhappy. But one who accepts these decisions without sadness, will be ensured Paradise.

EDUCATION and DAWAH

Education and Dawah

The most important aspect of being peaceful is that when you adhere to peace, the whole world is yours. There are no obstacles to one who performs work peacefully. Muslims must adopt a two-point formula: dawah and education. Dawah means spreading the message of Islam. President Lyndon Johnson once said, ‘Learning is the basic to our hopes for America’. I think this is true for every nation and group. Education is the basis of all kinds of progress. At the same time, it is also our duty to spread the message of God. We have prepared translations of the Quran in different languages and are trying to spread these throughout the world.

GOD MADE YOU FOR A HIGHER PURPOSE

God Made You for a Higher Purpose

Robert Clive was a clerk in the East India Company. This was way back in the eighteenth century. His salary was a mere 5 pounds a year. He felt it wasn’t enough for him. And so, one day, he decided to end his life. He pointed his revolver to his head but it misfired. Then, suddenly he cried out that God had made him for a big task! After this, he joined the East India Company’s Army, and slowly, he reached the top. Robert Clive went on to become instrumental in establishing British rule in India.
The Quran and the Hadith tell us that if God prevents a task from happening the way you had planned it, it is a clue that He wants you to do something else. The Prophet once said that when God loves a people, He tests them through difficulties. This is so that you can rethink your life, that can you re-plan your life. If your plans do not get fulfilled, it is an indication from God. It tells you that He has created you for something bigger than what you are presently involved in. God has not made you to make this world your goal and purpose and to get lost in it. He has created you to worship Him. So, instead of chasing the world, devote yourself to God-realization and inviting other people to God.

Moses was brought up in Pharaoh’s palace, but God created such conditions that his stay there could not continue. This was because God had created Moses, not to live in the palace, but for a far higher purpose, to call people to God. So, be grateful for the seeming setbacks and problems you face in life. They may be God’s way of telling you that He has some other, higher purpose.

GRATEFULNESS OF GOD

GRATEFULNESS OF GOD

“Presenting one’s gratitude to God is tawhid, while presenting it instead to a creature of God is shirk. During ancient times people attributed divinity to the sun, moon and other natural phenomena such as rain. This was because at that time they couldn’t explain these occurrences and held them in mysterious awe. Today after scientific advances, people rationally understand these natural phenomena. But in the present times the Creator has been separated from creation. People draw benefits from discoveries in nature but do not offer thanks to their Creator. Today people are living in a contradiction: they utilize the blessings of God but do not acknowledge God’s gifts to them. This contradiction in their lives is the source for the tension and stress we see in people today. “
